Chongqing is the only municipality that directly reports to the central government in Western China. It is also the economic hub of the upper Yangtze River and has a permanent population of 31.91 million.

Located in Chongqing, Chongqing Medical University (CQMU) is one of the most prestigious universities in China. It is among the first universities in the country to be authorized to confer doctoral degrees and also one of the earliest institutions designated as a demonstration base for international students. CQMU has over 31,000 faculty members and students.

Founded in 1939, Yongchuan Hospital is one of the eight hospitals affiliated to CQMU. Located in Yongchuan District, Chongqing,  the hospital sits at a key strategic point within the Chengdu–Chongqing Urban Agglomeration. Yongchuan District is also one of the the filming locations for Zhang Yimou’s film House of Flying Daggers.

Yongchuan Hospital is a Grade A tertiary hospital and a designated member of the Network of the International Emergency Rescue Center, recognized by the National Health Commission. With three main branches located in Xuanhua, Xinglonghu, and Da’an, the hospital spans an area of 433 mu. The hospital serves western Chongqing, southeastern Sichuan, and northwestern Guizhou.

The hospital offers a full range of services, including medical care, education, and research. With 47 clinical and support departments, its a regional leader in medical expertise, boasting provincial and ministerial-level key disciplines, laboratories, specialties, and unique programs.

The hospital has over 2,000 employees. Among them, 229 hold a senior professional title and 479 hold a doctoral or masters degree. Thanks to the deep pool of expertise and skills, the hospital has successfully performed a wide range of complex surgeries, such as extracorporeal circulation, transcatheter aortic valve implantation, intracardiac ultrasound-guided ablation for atrial fibrillation, and endovascular embolization for intracranial aneurysms. The hospital serves nearly one million patients annually.

The hospital also serves as the fifth clinical college and college of general practice of CQMU. It has established a comprehensive medical education system encompassing three majors: clinical medicine, ophthalmology, and nursing. Currently, nearly 1,000 students are enrolled in its bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. programs.

The hospital is a standardized training base for resident doctors and clinical pharmacists, accredited by the National Health Commission. It is also a standardized training center for nurses, recognized by the healthcare authority of Chongqing.  To date, it has trained over 5,000 medical professionals.

The hospital’s reach extends far beyond Chongqing and its surrounding areas. Its services reach villages in China’s remote mountainous regions and even in distant corners of Africa. Committed to improving global health, the hospital aims to make a significant impact on the wellbeing of humanity.
